Mar del Plata is stated as a city:

By the law of October 15th. of 1879 the Province Legislature created the Partido de General Pueyrredon, dividing in two the state known as General Balcarce. October 25th of 1906 is presented a Project in the legislation, petitioning that the town of de Mar del Plata, becomes recognized as a City. In the session of July 19th of 1907 this was accepted. December 13th of 1880 it was named Judge de Paz Antonio Alvarez, who was also the first president of the Municipal Corporation.  In 1883 he was suceded by  Ovidio Zubiaurre. In 1887 the Executive Power of the Province appoints the first mayor of General Pueyrredon to Fortunato de la Plaza.

Interesting facts:

a) Why is the city called Mar del Plata?
None of Patricio Peralta Ramos relatives knows why the founder chose that nameThere are two theories: 1) That the indians qualified the beach as  avin inalco, meaning shiny, bright  and that gave place to the name  Mar del Plata(Silver);
2) That the name Río de la Plata became this city over the Ocean in Mar de Plata .


The first train:

Having approved the enlargement of the branch line for the train between Maipu and Mar de Plata, thanks to the labor of the Governor of Buenos Aires, Dardo Rocha, the first trains comes from Mar del Plata in September 26 of 1886.

Mar del Plata Harbor:

The initiative of Dr. Pedro O. Luro made that the Congress of The Nation ,by national law Number 6.499, of October 11 of 1909, approved by the construction of Puerto de Ultramar en Mar del Plata.
In October of 1911, the building starts in the harbor. Months before the company builts workshops, a damn, quarry, etc...

February 24 of 1913: Oficial Oppening of the Construction of the harbor. An Oficial Certificate is made and put onto the first stone of la Escollera Sud.

They worked until august 1914 to maximum capacity. Even though the time from 1914- 1918 the work wasn’t paralyzed its speed was reduced. From these days are: la Dársena de Pescadores, la Plataforma para Lanchas Pesqueras, el Depósito de la Aduana, para mercaderías, Vías de Ferrocarril Sud. Habor movement is iniciated, stablishing sectors for fisherman in 1917).

On October 9 of 1922, the Official Inauguration of the Wharf Nro 1 of cabotage with 300 meters of wharf with an Official act and the presence of personalities and civil servants of the Nation.
November, 1922, the Societe Generale of Travaux Publics finish their tasks.
In 1934 is sanctioned the National Law 11.615, which arranges the ending of the works of the Port of Mar del Plata
